On Saturday, September 18th my husband, two kids, and I had the privilege to attend the MLJ Adoptions annual picnic, and I don’t think there was a better way to spend such a beautiful day.
I will admit that I did not know quite what to expect when we decided to attend the picnic. I’ve met a number of other families who have either adopted or are going through the adoption process with MLJ Adoptions, and I knew a few of my Congo mom friends would be there showing off their babies or showing pictures of babies we hope will soon arrive. However, I had no idea there would be so many families formed through the LOVE of adoption.
There were beautiful families everywhere I looked. Of course, they were not your “typical” families where everyone looks alike and is clearly related, but in many ways this is what made these families so beautiful. I was overwhelmed by the number of families who, guided by love, had made the decision to adopt and invite a child in need of love into their homes.
There were many families who had adopted from Ukraine, Guatemala, Vietnam, Congo, and from the U.S. I enjoyed meeting other families who are in the midst of the adoption process, like me. I must say that seeing all of these families together celebrating adoption put a big smile on my face, and re-affirmed that my family will have a lot of support as we go through this journey.
If there is one thing that I have learned through this process is that it is not for the weak or impatient. If you are the type of person who is interested in instant gratification, adoption is not for you. But if you are interested in providing a safe and loving home for a child who is looking to be loved and looking for a forever family, then adoption is for you.
That is exactly what I saw at the picnic, a gathering of families that were not based on blood, but based on love.
