There is support all around for you anything you would need throughout your adoption journey. There is a lot of benefit from talking with other peers about a similar experience and the ability to learn from one another. Even if you feel that you are doing just fine now, you can provide guidance and support to another that may be struggling. Adopting can be a lengthy process where you may feel alone with limited communication of any meaningful results just yet. It can help to talk to someone who is going through the same situation to exchange advice or be a listening ear. Seeking support should never have a negative connotation, it is just simply being a part of a group or community that supports one another.

There are many ways to find local support groups. You may not have known it, but there could be a support group right down the street from you! The National Infertility Association has a search engine that assists to find support groups by zip code and they also have an online support group as well. The North American Council on Adoptable Children has a component of about 900 adoption support groups that you can search by state or a certain group of interested. There are a lot of options for online support groups or forums if your local support group seems to far or you are more comfortable with an online perspective. There are different kinds of groups or forums that can meet your specific needs like international adoption. There is a forum known as Families for Russian and Ukrainian Adoptions that offer resources to adoptive families and even adoptees in Eastern Europe. Another forum option is DailyStrength that assists families in the early stages of adoption whether you are adopting domestically or internationally.

As we know, social media has taken over the world! There is an abundance of social media support groups available to adoptive parents. There are, however, some precautions to take into consideration before joining any specific group.

  • Know when to step away from social media if it is causing you any type of stress and it is doing more harm than good
  • Practice common sense and empathy when engaging with others in these support groups. Posting a photo of your successful adoption could spark some feelings in others that could be detrimental to their positivity
  • Please trust your adoption service provider before the advice of someone on Facebook or Instagram or other social media platform. Adoption professionals are here to help you and provide you all the information and should be considered the experts.
