Music: An Adoption Stress-Management Tool

Music is a wonderful and beautiful thing! It has the indescribable power to capture our emotions, thoughts, and feelings by putting them into melodies and lyrics. Songs have the ability to bring tears to our eyes, a smile upon our face, and heal our broken hearts. While the stress of adoption is unavoidable, music is a great way to cope with the procedural and emotional demands of the process. Studies show that music is an effective stress-management tool. Listening to music has both physiological and psychological benefits, such as lowering blood pressure, calming nerves, and reducing the level of stress hormones.

“I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”

– Billy Joel

“The only truth is music.”

– Jack Kerouac

“Music is intended and designed for sentient beings that have hopes and purposes and emotions.”

-Jacques Barzun

When you feel as though you’ve reached a breaking point, music can help you get through the tough times. Try picking one song you really love and feel connected to with your adoption. When you find yourself stressed out, play that song to help calm nerves and relax.  This month for our Adoption Fun question of the month we asked: “What songs help you get through the adoption process?” Here are some of the answers we got from you, thanks for sharing with us!
