Some of my fondest memories growing up are times I spent with my dad. He would let me ride my bike as he ran several times a week; we would talk a little bit, but mostly just spend time together. He often took me to the park to kick the soccer ball around. From a young age, he instilled a love of the game with me, and it’s a love that he also passed down to my sister and my brother. Every night before I went to bed, he would come and tuck me in and read with me. We read countless books together, exploring the worlds of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Even as an adult, we share books back and forth and enjoy frequent trips to the bookstore.
With Father’s Day rapidly approaching, I’ve been reflecting on the role that my dad has played in my growing-up. My dad is the unsung hero of my life. His presence, steadfastness and encouragement shaped me into the woman I am today. Each and every child deserves to be raised by parents like my father. Families provide orphaned and vulnerable children the opportunity to have an advocate and unconditional love. Having at least one parent provides stability to children who have been orphaned.
